Post-Monsoon Fungal Infections in Hyderabad: Itch, Rash & Safe Treatment

After Hyderabad’s rains, itch in the folds is often a fungal rash. Learn safe care, and why steroid combination creams can make ringworm harder to clear.

Hyderabad’s monsoon leaves walls damp and clothes slow to dry. Skin folds stay warm and wet under formal wear, school uniforms, and gym clothes. Every year, after the rains ease, dermatologists see a rise in itch that people call “fungal infection,” sometimes correctly and sometimes not. The safe path is a diagnosis, a medicine matched to that diagnosis, and patience with the full course.

AB Skin Clinic is a dermatology practice in KPHB and Manikonda. It does not run a separate fungal package or a seasonal kit. You book a consultation, the rash is examined, and treatment follows from that. This article is education so you know what to expect.

Rashes that flourish after rain

Superficial fungal infections like warm, occluded skin. Common patterns include ringworm of the body, itch in the groin, athlete’s foot between the toes, and yeast in body folds under the breasts, abdomen, or armpits. Pityriasis versicolor causes lighter or darker finely scaly patches on the chest and back and is often noticed when tanning is uneven after a humid month. These are different organisms and different shapes. A cream that suits one can fail on another.

They are contagious to varying degrees through shared towels, tight synthetic clothing, and skin-to-skin contact, but having one is not a hygiene failure. Sweat after a long commute is ordinary life in this city. The goal is to dry the area and treat the organism, not to scrub the skin raw.

Other rashes copy the picture. Eczema, psoriasis, intertrigo from friction alone, and bacterial infection can all redden a fold. Groin itch is not automatically fungal. That is why a photograph on a messaging app is a weak substitute for looking at the edge of the rash, the scale, and sometimes a simple skin scraping.

A caution about combination creams

A well known problem in India is the casual use of creams that mix a steroid with an antifungal and sometimes an antibiotic. They are widely sold and often recommended by a friend because the itch drops quickly. The steroid calms redness. The fungus, especially on the body, may not be cleared and can spread in a changed pattern that is harder to recognise later. Skin can thin, develop stretch marks, or break out in acne-like bumps if these creams are continued on the face or folds.

This is not a reason to fear every antifungal your doctor prescribes. It is a reason to avoid choosing a combination tube yourself, and to tell the dermatologist if you have already used one, including the name on the box. Stopping a strong steroid suddenly can flare the skin; your doctor will plan that step. Do not layer a second steroid from a fairness cream on top while you wait.

04

What treatment usually involves

After examination, care may be a topical antifungal for a set number of weeks, an oral antifungal when the rash is extensive, recurrent, or in a site where creams fail, or a different medicine entirely if the rash is not fungal. The course often continues after the itch has gone, because stopping on the first comfortable day is a common cause of relapse. Medicines are chosen for your age, pregnancy plans, other drugs, and liver history when oral treatment is considered. They should not be shared with family members “who have the same itch.”

Daily measures support the medicine:

  • Wash and fully dry between toes, in the groin, and under folds; a cool dryer on low can help if the air is still humid
  • Change out of wet office clothes or cricket kits instead of sitting in them
  • Prefer breathable cotton when you can, especially at night
  • Use a separate towel for the affected area and wash towels in hot water
  • Treat footwear and repeat foot infection together so the skin is not reinfected by the same shoes
  • Skip steroid combination creams unless the prescribing doctor has explained why that specific product is appropriate

Cosmetic procedures wait. Chemical peels and similar treatments are for intact, non-infected skin. Peeling or lasering over an active rash can spread irritation and delay healing. Finish the medical course first.

When to seek care promptly

Ask for a visit if the rash is spreading despite a pharmacy cream, if there is fever, pus, or severe swelling, if it involves the scalp of a child, or if you are pregnant, diabetic, or on medicines that affect immunity. Nail thickening and scalp patches need their own plan and do not clear with a few days of body cream.

Dr. S. Madhuri, MBBS, MD DVL, DNB DVL, Fellowship in Dermatosurgery and Lasers, consults at both AB Skin Clinic locations. She can distinguish a fungal edge from eczema and from pigment left behind after the infection has already settled. Brown marks after a rash fade slowly and are not a reason to restart a steroid cream.

You can book an appointment or reach the clinic through the contact page for KPHB and Manikonda. The doctor page lists her qualifications if you are choosing who should see a stubborn rash. Bring any tube you have already applied, even if the label is worn, so the next prescription does not repeat a medicine that failed.
